Press Release
Kavi Gupta Gallery is proud to present Curtis Mann’s debut Berlin exhibition, making oneself, making oneself.
In his latest body of work, Mann departs from his iconic geo-political subject matter to embrace the photographic process at its most fundamental. Wanting each photograph to be a participant in its production, Mann’s latest works are the elegant result of basic darkroom processes. Masking, spraying with bleach, and then developing select portions, Mann’s works draw from the principles and aesthetics of modernist composition to reevaluate the values these modes of working have for contemporary art today.
Curtis Mann (b. 1979 in Dayton, OH) lives and works in Chicago. Recent solo exhibitions includeEverything After (2010) at Kavi Gupta Gallery in Chicago, Something After (2010) at Galerie Almine Rech in Paris, and Modifications (2008) at Kusseneers Gallery in Antwerp. Mann has also been included in a number of group museum exhibitions, including 12x12: New Artists/New Work (2009) at the Museum Of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the 2010 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum Of American Art in New York. making onself, making oneself (2011) is Mann’s second solo exhibition with Kavi Gupta Gallery.

Gareth Long. Work in Progress, 2010 So good.
We shot a few images while I was working on the pieces for the NY Times magazine for their blog so I wanted to share them here. You can see a sampling of the images the NYT sent me that they had from Yemen and then a series of outtakes from test pieces, failed pieces, me trying to work on the sequencing of the spread on the inside and the other spread that didn’t get used. All were made on smaller prints so I had the ability to scan them on a flatbed. Let me know if you have any q’s.

Mostly, I have been using it for PR purposes. But definitely something I will look to add. As I peered back through the posts it is a glaring hole in my content. Thanks for letting me know. As for now, here are a few links

Limited Edition Print Sale
Artspace.com
Beginning April 26th in conjunction with NEXT / ART CHICAGO
I was recently asked to produce a limited edition print series in partnership with the organziation, Artspace.com. There are two different pieces for sale (one large, one small) and each piece only exists as the print edition; they were each created specifically for the project. Artspace is a wonderful organization and I am excited to be working with them. You can find more information about the mission of the private print sales HERE. “The Artspace team has a deep appreciation for the positive role that artists, cultural institutions and non-profit organizations play in our society. Every single sale of artwork on the site directly supports an artist, institution or non-profit. By collecting with Artspace, you’re helping to sustain creative culture around the globe as well as supporting important organizations that are dedicated to making the world a better place. “
Artspace will also be exhibiting works at NEXT in their own booth and both pieces will be on display!
Hang on tight while we grab the next page
